Naschmarkt in the Evening & “Vienna Night Market”: What’s Actually Open After Dark

The short answer

Vienna has no night market at the Naschmarkt. The Naschmarkt is a daytime food market: the food stalls close at 21:00 Monday to Friday and 18:00 on Saturday. What does stay open in the evening is the restaurant and bar strip that runs down the length of the market — open until 23:00, Monday to Saturday. So a Naschmarkt evening is worth it for dinner and drinks, not for browsing a night market.

If you searched for “Vienna night market” and landed here, you are not alone — thousands of visitors expect an Asian-style market of evening food stalls. Vienna does not have one at the Naschmarkt, and the city’s official schedule makes that clear. What Vienna’s most famous market offers after dark is a long strip of restaurants, bars and terraces where you eat and drink until 23:00. This page sets out exactly what is open, day by day, with the hours published by the City of Vienna.

The one-line reality: the food market is a daytime market

The Naschmarkt is first and foremost a produce and deli market, and it runs on daytime hours. Per the City of Vienna’s official schedule (wien.gv.at/freizeit/naschmarkt, last updated 29 June 2026):

  • Food stalls (produce, spices, cheese, deli, baked goods): 06:00–21:00 Monday–Friday, 06:00–18:00 Saturday.
  • Farmers’ and artisan market squares: 06:00–19:30 Monday–Friday, 06:00–18:00 Saturday.

By 21:00 midweek the stalls are shutting down, and on Saturday the market is done by 18:00. The vegetable crates, the spice stalls and the deli counters you see in daytime photos are not what you find at 22:00. The gastronomy — the restaurants, bars and cafés built into and around the market — is the part that carries on into the evening.

Evening hours by day — the official schedule

The table below is the City of Vienna’s official market schedule. The restaurant and bar row is the one that matters for an evening visit.

Segment Monday – Friday Saturday Sunday & public holidays
Food stalls (produce, spices, cheese, deli) 06:00 – 21:00 06:00 – 18:00 CLOSED
Farmers’ & artisan squares 06:00 – 19:30 06:00 – 18:00 CLOSED
Restaurants & bars (the evening strip) 06:00 – 23:00 06:00 – 23:00 09:00 – 21:00

☼ Evening visit at a glance

Monday–Friday: stalls open until 21:00, restaurants and bars until 23:00. The best all-round evening.
Saturday: stalls close at 18:00, restaurants and bars still run until 23:00 — but the market is at its busiest and busiest in the daytime.
Sunday and public holidays: the food market is shut. Only restaurants and bars open (09:00–21:00), plus the flower trade on selected dates.

The evening dining strip

The restaurants and bars at the Naschmarkt are the part of the market that behaves like a dining district. The City of Vienna schedule gives them 06:00–23:00, Monday to Saturday. In practice that means:

  • Dinner runs late. The City of Vienna’s 23:00 maximum applies to restaurants and bars on the market strip. The 01:00 weekend closing listed for a restaurant beside the market is not a market-strip option; check the address and current hours before booking.
  • Where the strip sits. The densest run of restaurants and terraces is along the market between the western Kettenbrückengasse end (U4 Kettenbrückengasse, the flea-market end) and the terraces and stands nearer the city/Karlsplatz side. Walking the length of the market is the simplest way to choose.
  • Two rhythms, one market. Arrive before the stalls close (before 21:00 midweek, 18:00 Saturday) to shop the produce and deli stands, then settle into a restaurant as the shutters come down. After the stalls close, only the gastronomy remains open.

For what’s where, see our Naschmarkt restaurants page and the detailed Naschmarkt restaurant guide; for the day’s full opening schedule, see Naschmarkt opening hours.

Sunday & holiday evenings

On Sundays and public holidays the food market is closed — no produce, no deli, no artisan stalls. What remains open is the gastronomy. The City of Vienna schedule gives restaurants and bars 09:00–21:00 on Sundays and public holidays, which makes a Sunday evening at the market a quiet, low-key affair rather than a lively one.

🍀 Flower trade on selected Sundays

The flower trade opens for extra hours, 09:00–19:00, on selected Sundays and public holidays — chiefly Valentine’s Day (14 February), Mother’s Day (second Sunday in May) and All Saints’ Day (1 November). On an ordinary Sunday the flower section is closed with the rest of the food market.

A Sunday note: the City of Vienna gives restaurants and bars 09:00–21:00 on Sundays and public holidays — that is the market-wide maximum. Individual restaurants set their own Sunday hours (the tourist board lists 10:00–21:00 for several of them), so check the venue before you go.

What closes, and when

Two things surprise evening visitors most:

  • The last guaranteed “everything open” window is narrow. The City of Vienna’s Naschmarkt page states that all stalls must be open Tue–Fri 15:00–18:00 — that is the market-wide core trading window that must be covered, not the full day. (The city’s Marktraum page gives the hall’s own stands a longer window, Tue–Fri 10:00–18:00 — a different scope, not a conflict.) If you want to see the market in full swing (produce and deli and the daytime buzz), aim for an afternoon, not the late evening.
  • The Marktraum hall is closed at night. The market’s new covered hall, the Marktraum (opened November 2025), is a daytime visit only — it does not stay open into the evening, nor does its roof terrace. Plan it as a daytime stop.

“So where do I eat late in Vienna?”

On the Naschmarkt’s restaurant strip, the City of Vienna’s maximum closing time is 23:00 Monday to Saturday and 21:00 on Sundays and public holidays. The 01:00 weekend closing listed on our Naschmarkt restaurants page belongs to a restaurant beside the market, not on the strip; check its address and current hours before making a late booking. There is no Naschmarkt night market and no market-stall row that opens after dark. For later dining, look to the wider city; our Vienna locals’ guide offers ideas, and the Naschmarkt map helps orient you around the market.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a night market in Vienna?

Not in the usual sense. Vienna has no Asian-style night market of evening food stalls, and there is none at the Naschmarkt. The market’s food stalls are daytime only.

Is the Naschmarkt open at night?

The food stalls are not: they close at 21:00 Monday–Friday and 18:00 Saturday. The restaurants and bars along the market stay open until 23:00 Monday–Saturday, so the market has an evening life — but it is the gastronomy, not the stalls.

What time do the Naschmarkt restaurants close?

The City of Vienna’s maximum closing time for restaurants and bars on the Naschmarkt strip is 23:00 Monday to Saturday and 21:00 on Sundays and public holidays. The 01:00 weekend closing listed for a restaurant beside the market applies to that nearby venue, not the strip; check its address and current hours before booking.

Is the Naschmarkt open on Sunday evening?

The food market is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Only restaurants and bars open, from 09:00 to 21:00, plus the flower trade (09:00–19:00) on selected dates such as Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
