The New Naschmarkt: Marktraum Market Hall & Naschpark — 2026 Guide

Published: October 2026  |  Updated: October 2026

💡 The Short Answer

Vienna's Naschmarkt gained two new places in late 2025, and this site previously had no page about either. The Marktraum is a covered market hall at the market's entrance opposite Linke Wienzeile 34, run by the City of Vienna (MA 59), with 13 market stands. The Naschpark is a new 6,820 m² public park built on the old asphalt car park between the Wienzeilen. Both are open now — the Naschpark opened in September 2025 and the city lists it as complete. If you have read here or elsewhere that the Naschpark is "ongoing through 2027", that is out of date: the park itself is finished, and only the flea-market area still has work scheduled.

What the Marktraum Is

The Marktraum is the Naschmarkt's new covered market hall. It is operated by the City of Vienna through MA 59 (Marktgruppe Süd / Marktraum), not by a private landlord, and it holds 13 market stands under one roof. Journalists who visited at the opening described a wood-and-glass building that extends the market indoors, so that part of the Naschmarkt now trades sheltered from the weather year-round.

That matters more than it sounds. The Naschmarkt is mostly an open-air strip along the Wienzeilen, which is wonderful in spring and punishing in a January wind. The Marktraum gives the market an all-weather core at its entrance, without replacing the outdoor stalls — the street market, the restaurants and the Saturday flea market all continue as before.

The hall opened in November 2025; the Austrian broadcaster ORF dates the opening to 21 November 2025. It is a new building, not a renovation of an older hall, and it sits inside the market's rebuilding programme that also produced the Naschpark (below).

Marktraum Opening Hours and Location

The city publishes the same hours for the Marktraum as for the main market, which means the hall follows the market's weekday rhythm and closes on Sundays.

⚠️ The Hall's Floor Area — Who Reports What

The City of Vienna publishes no floor area for the hall. ORF reported roughly 800 m² at the opening — a single report; Gault&Millau, Der Standard and the hall's ventilation contractor all give 850 m². Treat "around 800–850 m²" as a reported range, not an official figure.

What's Inside the Marktraum

The city's product list for the hall is a curated, mostly regional basket rather than a repeat of the whole street market. The categories published for the Marktraum are:

  • Bread & pastry, plus a dedicated coffee offer
  • Meat and fish
  • Cheese
  • Jam, honey and chocolate, plus tea
  • Flowers
  • Vegetables & mushrooms
  • Delicatessen

The City of Vienna's opening notice named the traders moving in (Gault&Millau reported the same list). We list them here as reported at the opening — the trader mix in a young hall can and does change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm current occupants with MA 59 (contact above) before travelling specifically for one of them:

  • Bio-Fleischerei Waldgut (organic butcher)
  • 28Lots (chocolate)
  • Blün (aquaponics — fish and vegetables)
  • Mosers Wildfang (wild-caught fish from Lake Millstatt)
  • Käsehütte Maria Taferl (cheese)
  • Fratelli Valentino (Apulian cheese, made in Vienna)
  • Bioschanze & Hut & Stiel (vegetables & mushrooms)
  • Dolls Gärtnerei (cut flowers from Floridsdorf)
  • Röstraum (coffee roasting)
  • Unverschwendet (rescued produce)
  • Brotzeit (delicatessen — regional specialities)
  • brutal gut Gastronomie (the market bar — aperitivo and snacks)
  • Bäckerei Sorger (bakery)

No further trader names are published here — if a name is not on this list, we have no source for it and will not invent one.

The Roof Terrace and the Markttafel

Two features make the Marktraum more than a roof over stalls.

The roof terrace is publicly accessible — the city calls it an "öffentlich zugängliche Terrasse" — and it is barrier-free. It gives a wide view over the Wiental and the market, which is the rare chance to see the Naschmarkt from above rather than from inside it. Because the hall closes at night, so does the terrace: this is a daytime view, not a sunset bar.

The "Markttafel" is a social table inside the hall where you can eat what you have just bought, on the spot. It turns the hall into a place to assemble a meal from several stands at once — cheese here, bread there, a glass of something — rather than only a shop.

The Markträumchen: Show Kitchen and Event Space

Inside the hall there is also a flexible room, the "Markträumchen": a show / workshop kitchen that doubles as an event space. It hosts cooking courses and tastings, and it is bookable on Monday–Friday 06:00–19:30 and Saturday 06:00–18:00. If you are organising a group visit or a private tasting, that is the room to ask MA 59 about (contact in the table above). It is a bookable space, not a scheduled public programme — so do not assume a course is running on the day you happen to visit.

The Naschpark: Vienna's New Market Park

The Naschpark is the second half of the rebuild, and the one most often described as still "in the future". It is not: it opened in September 2025 and the City of Vienna's project page lists it as implemented / complete. It replaces a former asphalt car park of 6,820 m² between the Wienzeilen with a green space for the market district.

Naschpark detail Value (City of Vienna)
OpenedSeptember 2025 (residents' festival reported for 19 September 2025) — status: complete
Size6,820 m², former asphalt car park converted to green space
Trees70 trees in the park; more than 90 new trees across the whole project
PlantingMore than 50,000 plants (reported at opening)
Tree speciesSilk trees, Judas trees, flowering ash, honey locust, ornamental apple, medlars — some more than 25 years old, so they give shade quickly
Features2 shady pergolas, seating, picnic tables, hammocks, a slackline, 3 fountains and 4 water features, lawns, a children's balancing device, and a small viewpoint over the Wiental
Cycle pathA new 200 m two-way cycle path (Margaritensteg → Linke Wienzeile), with foot and bike traffic separated
Flea marketKept — it ran throughout construction and continues on the market's usual Saturdays

Why the park sits on a "deck"

The Naschpark is built over the vaulted Wien River channel (from around 1900) and the U4 line beneath it. In places the soil depth is only about 70 cm, far too shallow for mature trees to root safely above a metro tunnel. The city's solution, as described on its project page, is a reinforced-concrete slab with a root-proof membrane and extra lateral support for the U4 — engineering that is invisible from the surface but is the reason the park could be built here at all.

Where Is It? Orientation Map

Both projects sit along the same short stretch of the Naschmarkt, between the two Wienzeile streets. The hall is at the market's entrance facing Linke Wienzeile 34; the park is the green block behind the market, on the site of the old car park. The diagram below is a schematic orientation aid, not to scale — it shows how the pieces relate, not exact positions or vendor layout.

What's Still to Come

The two headline pieces — hall and park — are done. What remains is the flea-market area: the city plans a second phase that will redesign the flea-market surface, and its project page lists the overall rebuild as planned for completion at the end of 2027, including the flea-market area and the Landparteienplatz. That is a plan, not a finished state — treat any end-2027 reference as the city's current schedule rather than a firm date.

The important correction: the Naschpark is not "ongoing through 2027". The park opened in September 2025 and is complete. Only the flea-market area is still on the programme. Our own opening hours page carried the older "future development" wording, and this page is the corrected account.

Two Numbers the Sources Report Differently — and Why

Two Marktraum figures are reported inconsistently, and neither is a typo. One is a question of scope: the City of Vienna publishes a market-wide rule and a hall-specific one, for two different populations of stands. The other is a floor area no official source has ever published. Where the figures differ they describe different things, and we say which is which:

Detail Figure A Figure B
Marktraum floor area (no official figure published) ORF: about 800 m² — a single report at the opening Gault&Millau, Der Standard and the hall's ventilation contractor: 850 m²
Mandatory core trading window Market-wide (City of Vienna Naschmarkt page, updated 29 June 2026): all stalls and premises must be open Tue–Fri 15:00–18:00 Marktraum hall only (City of Vienna Marktraum page, updated 9 September 2026): the hall's own stands must be open Tue–Fri 10:00–18:00

The hall's window sits inside the market's; they are not competing figures.

Neither figure changes whether you can visit — the hall's Mon–Fri and Saturday hours are agreed — and the floor area is a press-reported range rather than an official one. If you need a firm time for a specific stand, phone MA 59.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Marktraum free to enter?

The City of Vienna publishes no admission fee for the Marktraum, and it functions as part of the market — you walk in, as you do anywhere else on the Naschmarkt. We can state that no entry charge is published; we cannot state a price for anything, because individual products are priced by each trader.

Is the Marktraum open on Sundays?

No. It follows the market's hours — Monday–Friday 06:00–21:00 and Saturday 06:00–18:00 — so like the food market it is closed on Sundays and public holidays. On a Sunday the Naschmarkt is a restaurants-and-bars visit, not a shopping one.

How many stands are in the Marktraum?

13 market stands, per the City of Vienna. The categories range from bread, cheese and meat to coffee, chocolate, flowers and mushrooms.

When did the Marktraum and the Naschpark open?

The Marktraum opened in November 2025 (ORF reports 21 November 2025). The Naschpark opened in September 2025 and is listed by the city as complete.

How big is the Naschpark?

6,820 m², with 70 trees in the park and more than 50,000 plants. It is a public city park — you do not need a ticket, and it is not a market you shop in.

Can I still visit the Saturday flea market?

Yes. The flea market was kept through construction and continues; the redesign of the flea-market surface is a later phase, listed by the city as part of the plan completing at the end of 2027. See our Naschmarkt flea market page for its day and hours.
